Eaton and ATEC Training Academy Provide Market’s First CompEx NEC 500 Course Certifications

<<Blog Topic>>

This NEC 500 competence-based training and assessment for electrical and electronics personnel working in explosive atmospheres is the first of its kind in the industry and will be exclusively offered at Eaton’s Experience Center in Houston.

Power management company Eaton today announced its collaborative efforts with ATEC Training and Certification Services to launch a new CompEx-certified NEC 500 course.

The NEC 500 course features enhanced modules to help design build engineers, plant operators and industrial facility owners reduce costs and the potential for catastrophic events in hazardous and industrial environments.

Certified by CompEx, an internationally recognized solution for validating competency in explosive atmospheres, this practical, hands-on training and assessment will take place in a realistic simulated environment, giving attendees a comprehensive learning experience that will transfer to their work setting and enhance the real-world experience.

The focus of this training is National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 70 2014, NEC 500 Code of Practice, American Petroleum Institute (API) RP 500 for Area Classification, and API RP 14F Recommended Practice for Class and Division Electrical Equipment Installation.

“Proper training and certification can help reduce the potential for catastrophic events and can help keep everyone involved in hazardous work areas safe. By working with the ATEC Training Academy to exclusively offer the new NEC500 CompEx-certified course, we are providing specialized training to help ensure a safe work environment for everyone from maintenance to management personnel”, said Alan Clark | Eton’s Experience Center Manager.

Eaton’s Experience Center

Located in Houston, Eaton’s Experience Center is an industrial training facility and the only NEC- and IEC- focused CompEx training location in North America. Including the new NEC 500 course, the facility offers six new courses that take advantage of the facility’s true-to-life industrial environments and hands-on training opportunities.

The Experience Center, which expanded in 2016 to add six new interactive applications, including a full-scale downstream petrochemical plant, also offers ATEC B.E.S.T. courses, which cover basic electrical and mechanical skills to provide a strong foundation of practices used in industrial workspaces.

ATEC’s extensive knowledge of international standards and requirements for safe design and operation of equipment in explosive atmospheres combined with Eaton’s expert trainers and world-class industrial facility provide the highest quality educational opportunity in the industry.

CompEx, or competency in explosive atmospheres, was designed and developed by industry for industry in 1994 to provide a validation scheme that ensures personnel have the knowledge and skills for the specialty within explosive atmospheres.

The CompEx Certification Body is accredited to ISO/IEC 17024 : 2012 Conformity Assessment – General Requirements for Bodies operating Certification of Persons. The CompEx Scheme provides independence for competency validation using only centers that are licensed to the CompEx Certification Body, having met their rigorous approval process. CompEx is a registered trademark of JTLimited, part of the JTL Group.
