Hazardous Area Classification

What do the Hazardous Area Classification zones mean?

The purpose of a hazardous area classification is to identity sources of release of flammable gas, vapor, or dust to ensure employee awareness of the work environment and to avoid catastrophic events that may arise from daily operations or because of some unexpected event.

Hazardous areas are classified into zones based on an assessment of the frequency of the occurrence and duration of an explosive gas atmosphere, as shown in the illustration below.
